Generative Systems
Each project begins with a generative procedure explored over months or years. Individual series investigate different behaviors as parameters, materials, or methods change. Organized conceptually rather than chronologically, these projects trace the evolution of a single system across multiple bodies of work.
Each system links to the bodies of work generated through its evolving procedures.
Motion becomes line.
A virtual articulated arm generates continuous line drawings through harmonic and non-harmonic motion. Small changes to the system produce a wide range of behaviors, from dense accumulations to delicate filaments and complex spatial forms.
Cartography becomes terrain.
Dream Maps begins with the ordered geometry of latitude and longitude. Gradient noise displaces these cartographic grids, transforming maps into imagined topographies. By varying scale, distortion, and layering, the same underlying process produces landscapes, geological formations, bodily forms, and abstract fields. Each series explores a different reading of this evolving terrain.
Direction becomes volume.
Vector orientation determines every mark in the image. Variations in direction and density generate forms that suggest volume, light, and material without relying on conventional modeling.
Gesture becomes structure.
A single gestural mark is translated, rotated, reflected, or layered according to systematic rules. Repetition transforms expressive movement into larger structures, producing fields that oscillate between writing, weaving, architecture, and ornament. Different series explore how simple operations generate increasingly complex visual organizations.
Geometry becomes growth.
Tessellations begins with regular geometric tilings whose vertices are systematically displaced and modulated. As the underlying order is disturbed, rigid grids give way to structures that appear to vibrate, fold, and proliferate. Different series explore the balance between crystalline organization and organic instability through variations of the same generative process.
Gesture becomes language.
Invented alphabets emerge from the transformation of calligraphic gesture. These works borrow the visual qualities of writing while remaining intentionally unreadable, exploring language as form rather than communication.
Inspired by Jorge Luis Borges' story, this project constructs an invented writing system within the constraints of his fictional library. Each page is generated from a unique alphabet and follows the prescribed structure of the books described in the story, treating language as an infinite combinatorial system rather than a vehicle for meaning.
Repetition becomes pattern.
Simple grids become sites of variation through rotation, repetition, layering, and displacement. Complex visual rhythms emerge from the interaction of otherwise modest geometric rules.
Translation becomes harmony.
Simple geometric figures are translated through harmonic motion to generate layered structures that evolve from repetition, phase relationships, and interference.
New systems will emerge occasionally, and existing systems will continue to evolve through successive series.
